Okonkwo's main difficulty is attaining personal freedom is the legacy he was left by his father. Throughout the novel, Okonkwo is afraid that he will be seen or become like his father, who he considered a cowardly, lazy man. Many of Okonkwo's actions, both good and bad, are directly related to this fear. he wants to be the strongest, wealthiest man in the clan. Unfortunately, it is this same fear that leads him to disown his son and distance him from his wives.
