Okonkwo's father was lazy and deeply in debt. His son was determined not to be like his father, who he did not respect. Okonkwo began his rise in the tribe by becoming a great wrestler, achieving status in his tribe and reknown far beyond the village. He also fought in two tribal wars.... he was fierce and brave.

In the beginning chapters, we also learn that Okonkwo did not inherit land or seeds. He began as a sharecropper, and later had his own seeds to plant. When we meet Okonkow he has two barns filled with yams. He is a wealthy and well respected man. He has three wives.... and many children.
