Okonkwo had little to do with his son Nwoye. Okonkwo's stubbornly narrow definition of masculinity pretty much estranged the two from each other. Okonkwo was proud of his adopted son's, Ikemefunas, influence on Nwoye. He felt that Nwoye was becoming more masculine and coming out of his shell to act more like a man. Unfortunately Nwoye could never become masculine enough to suit his father. As for father son relationships, Okonkwo demanded that the relationship be on his terms. Either his son conformed to Okonkwo's own identity, born out of his own insecurities, or risk being abandoned. One hopes that this is not how father/son relationships should be conducted.
