I think his community is certainly part of it. Gender roles and cultural norms serve as the backdrop for Okonkwo. His own particular life plays a role as well. Much of a man's identity is placed on his father's reputation. Okonkwo's father was considered a weak and shameful man. Okonkwo overcompensated for his father's shortcomings by becoming a very successful hyper-masculine figure in the village.
