The presence of the missionaries and their new religion causes changes in the tribal community that make it difficult for tribal leaders to maintain order. The Christian church initially separated itself from the village, but according to the text, its disregard for the tribe's customs creates an atmosphere of lawlessness within the village. The rulers of Mbanta, thus, ostracize the Christians in order to regain their power and protect their way of life. Sadly, their efforts include destroying the church, which only attracts the foreign government.
