Things Fall Apart

How would you describe Okonkwo as a character? How easy is he to understand? Has he grown/developed from the beginning of the novel?

Please be specific and use evidence. :)

Okonkwo fits the definition of the tragic hero. Proud, ambitious, and ill-tempered, Okonkwo has managed to rise from nothing to become one of the strongest and prosperous men in the village. Okonkwo, however, is a man of absolutes. His often violent emptions are not tempered with compassion or even logic. This, combined with self-esteem issues, proves to be Okonkwo’s eventual undoing.
