Things Fall Apart

How might the villagers have reacted if the British had demanded that they abandon their traditional religion?

Consider this…

“The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion…Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart.”

Had the British walked in and demanded the Igbo follow their religion, they would probably have been met with an insurrection, which would not have had the results they desired. By moving in quietly, they gained the Igbo's trust and simply became friendly neighbors. The fact that they didn't force the issue incited curiosity rathert than anger.
