How does Umuofia respond to Okonkwo's return? Why?

The clan has no interest in Okonkwo's return. I believe they respond this way because they no longer wish to have conflict with the colonists. The clan seems to wish for nothing more than to live harmoniously alongside them. The community desires peace above all else.
