There is a sense of ominous for foreboding both in the poem and the latter stages of the novel. The "The Second Coming" was written in 1919 in the aftermath of the first World War. The chaos of the war represented as impending doom,

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

For Okonkwo the war is the coming of man with "skin as white as chalk". THe chaos and "anarchy" he will cause will destroy Okonkwo's Igbo world; things will fall apart.
