The influx of African Americans into Harlem represented one huge influence that created the Harlem Renaissance. The rich white people for whom Harlem was originally built moved North leaving behind a neighborhood that became a vibrant center for African American culture across all artistic fields. Important writers from WEB Dubois to Langston Hughes began to expose a new sensibility in literature and writing that was unknown to the general population. The writing often reflected the changes that happened post-Civil War and posited an existence which could or could not be the future. Obviously Black Monday, the Great Depression, the Roaring Twenties - all the major American events influenced the writers and artists of the Harlem Renaissance.
