There is a definite mood of self-discovery in the opening paragraphs. This book begins backwards with a confident protagonist who has lived a life that the porch-sitters could not fathom. The tone and the mood are filled with the strength and mystery of life. Janie Personifies a sense of power and emancipation from the traditional forces that once kept her marginalized.
