Personification

“So she sat on the porch and watched the moon rise. Soon its amber fluid was drenching the earth, and quenching the thirst of the day.” (Chapter 10)

Metaphor

“Ships at a distance have every man’s wish aboard.” (chapter 1)

Symbol

The horizon is a symbol of Janie's lifelong search for happiness.

The gossiping townspeople also offer foreshadowing early in the story. Everything they speculate. Comments like “Where all dat money her husband took and died and left her?” foreshadow later events.
