Nanny's idea is that her granddaughter should marry a wealthy man so that she doesn't have to worry about her financial security. Nanny believes that black women only have one option in life: to marry a man of some wealth. Nanny cannot comprehend a woman, especially a black woman, making her own way in life. To Nanny, a black woman is property so she might as well belong to a man of some wealth.
