Their Eyes Were Watching God

Their Eyes Were Watching God

what is the meaning and feelings embodied in the quotation: “The town had a basketful of feelings good and bad about Joe’s positions and possessions, but none had the temerity to challenge him. They bowed down to him rather, because he was all of these things, and then again he was all of these things because the town bowed down”

Joe was charismatic and looked like he had money. He was unlike any black man they had seen. The town was impoverished and the people felt intimidated by Joe. Joe felt a superiority over the others.
