From the various biblical allusions, title, and reference to god and religion in the novel, what is Hurston saying about the nature of God or religion?

She isn't saying anything about God specifically. She's relating to the reader the folkloric nature of their relationship with God. Hurston's background as an anthropologist influenced her writing in that she is trying to show the readers the African American people as she knew them. They believed in God and the folklore about him. They saw him as almost a real being in Heaven looking down on them as indivduals and acting for or against them. It was a very southern uneducated perspective.
