Janie uses nature to fortify herself. She splits her mind..... on one side seeing "the shadow of herself tending store and prostrating itself before Jody" while her real self "sits under a shady tree with the wind blowing through her hair and clothes." When she finally is able to center her mind on nature completely.... she becomes strong enough to stand up to Joe.
