In the first chapter, the narrator is omniscient because we are given th thoughts of Janie, Pheoby, and the Eatonville women gossiping their porches.Although it appears that Janie is telling her story to phoebe, the actual flashbacks are still omniscient. Still, Janie is a developing character so we get her sense of change, hurt, pain, emancipation....throughout the novel.
