If you're asking this question in general, then I'd answer by saying that identity provides a much-needed interpretive framework for something like a dream. Without an articulate understanding of identity, it is impossible to even formulate a coherent dream. Of course, in order to realize a dream, one must have an understanding of the dream in the first place.
