the setting is the early 1900's for the most part, but how does that relate with the conflicts?

The exact settings change but I suppose the early 1900's certainly reflects racial divides. Slavery in America had only recently ended on 1865. Women were subjugated and certainly black women fared worse than white women. Janie had to navigate through a world where black women had little to look forward to besides marriage and having kids.
