“Ah wants things sweet wid mah marriage lak when you sit under a pear tree and think. Ah...” What does a pear tree have to do with what Janie wants?

What does a pear tree have anything to do with it?

The pear tree is a symbol of Janie, herself.

Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches.

The pear is shaped similar to a woman's body, it blossoms in the same way a girl becomes a young woman, it needs the bee to fertilize it, to bring its fruit forward (motherhood).
