When Nanny worked on a plantation as a slave, she had a daughter. Her daughter turned out to have white features meaning that she was raped by her master (a common tragedy back then). The Master went off to fight the Civil War and the mistress of the house threatened to beaten and then she would sell the girl. Nanny ran away and survived until slavery was abolished.
