Amos Hicks wants to take advantage of Janie. He was old enough to be her father but he sees it as an opportunity to hit on a young girl. He is disappointed when he finds out that Janie is Joe's wife and not his daughter. We hope that Amos's ignorance isn't completely representative of the town's mentality. Lee is Amos's friend who is slightly more level headed. He thinks that Joe Starks just might pull off the role of a white man in town.
