This chapter is the first illustration of how different Janie is from other black women. Janie is miserable in her marriage and Nanny seems puzzled as to why. Janie sees that she will never achieve her illusion of romantic love with Logan. She becomes a woman because women are defined by suffering and Janie now knows suffering. For women the dream of truth is something they will never attain so it remains somewhere out there. Janie finally realizes there is nothing out their for her, the dream of truth is dead.
