Why have the narrator and her husband John rented the "colonial mansion"? What is its history, and what is the reaction of the heroine to this estate? Does she feel comfortable living in the house?

The narrator suffers from post-partum depression. Back when this story takes place, post-partum depression was known as "womanly hysterics". The mansion was supposed to be rented by wealthy people but their money ran out so it was being rented for a cheap price. The narrator hates the room she is locked into for some relaxation time. It is uncomfortable and the wallpaper is crazy ugly. I say crazy for a reason: it literally drives are protagonist crazy.
