The narrator has been prescribed a "rest cure" for her 'nervous condition' which nowadays would be identified as depression. Her husband thinks her thoughts are merely ramblings of a hysterical woman, as women (he thinks) are prone to. The narrator does not want her inner feelings or any of her artistic endeavors shared.
