Who is john and his role?

Who is John? What is his role within the house -- that is, what domestic job or outside job does he do?

John, the narrator’s husband, freely embraces his role as superior to women. He embodies the patriarchal elitism over women in that era. As a physician, he sees women's emotions as trivial and hysteric. John seeks to curb the narrator’s creative outlets. He “prescribes” a “rest cure” by locking her in a nursery at their summer house.
