The narrator has recently given birth but there is no evidence of a physical illness. The woman is depressed. Her physician husband thinks that she needs a vacation of rest. It is hinted that the woman recently gave birth to a child; her sickness might now be called postpartum depression but this is not likely. Her anxieties are very much born out of her need to be an individual and the gender specific constraints put upon her by her husband.
