The Yellow Wallpaper

Several times at the beginning of the story, the narrator says such things as "What is one to do?" and "What can one do?" What do these comments refer to? What, if anything, do they suggest about women's roles at the time the story was written?

The narrator feels powerless against the patriarchal world she lives under. She does not know how to resist her husband's sexist and patriarchal views of her and all women. This suggests a time when women were subjugated to narrow gender roles that were defined by men.
