The narrator was a writer and an artist. Her husband, a doctor, saw this as a weakness of the female gender. She was had recently began to suffer symptoms of depression and anxiety which might have exasperated her mental problems in the room. Certainly her husband's "rest cure" was the main catalyst to her breakdown. Being isolated and locked in a room would drive most people to mental breakdown.
