The narrator always juxtaposes how she feels with how John feels. It is as if she thinks her own emotions about herself are corrected by how John feels about her. She begins to resent John’s belief that she is not sick and it is all in her mind, “John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him.”
