John is a physician. From the text, we can infer that John is a prideful man, as rather than take his wife to another doctor, he decides to treat her himself. John sees no evidence of a physical malady, thus, he prescribes a rest cure, which has recently been created, promoted, and endorsed by a well known physician. He isolates his wife, medicates her, and removes her favorite passtimes, which leaves her with nothing to do but think. He discourages her negativity and ignores her pleas for company and the ability to write. In essence..... his certainty that he knew best caused her condition to grow increasingly worse.
