John regards the narrator as somewhat weak and womanly - he thinks she is simply a bit depressed and needs rest and no work to recover. Everything she tries to think about reflects his feeling that he wants her to quit being so frivolous and be more serious and down to earth.

He says that with my imaginative power and habit of story-making, a nervous weakness like mine is sure to lead to all manner of excited fancies, and that I ought to use my will and good sense to check the tendency. So I try.
