Basically the husband treats his wife with a certain disdain. He humours her complaints thinking they are simply the ravings of a woman. Being a doctor he holds a certain old-boy superiority over her. He is clueless to his wife's emotional and psychological health. Rest is the worst thing for her because her mind needs engagement. Still his view is a throwback to a very sexist patriarchal mindset that existed in those days.

The rest-cure method involves locking his wife in a room with ugly wallpaper.

The Rest Cure treatment kept patients in isolation from friends and family with only a fatty milk diet and treated like a child who is sometimes forced-fed. It is prescribed for those who suffer from some nervousness disorders.
