In the first chapter, Mole is busy with his spring cleaning when he is struck by a strange feeling of restlessness. In response, he quickly tunnels his way out of his burrow, ending up in the middle of a field, foreshadowing an upcoming adventure, a desire to explore, and the possibility of new friends.

He suddenly flung down his brush on the floor , said "bother" and o'blow and "hang up spring cleaning" and bolted for the door. (pg 2)
