The Whipping Boy Imagery

The Whipping Boy Imagery

The image of the prince in Jemmy's chamber

The narrator employs Jemmy's point of view to vividly describe his appearance. The description facilitates the development of mental images in the reader's mind. The prince is described in the following manner: "Jemmy saw that the prince was wearing a black cloak and carrying a wicker basket the size of a sea chest."

The shining of the night moon and the swirling fog

The image of the shining moon is apparent in the fourth chapter of the novel. Additionally, the fog is described in a way that facilitates imagery. The narrator writes: "The night moon had lit their way like a lantern. But by dawn, the runaways, double-mounted on a horse from the castle stable, were hopelessly lost. A thick fog had swirled in, they'd strayed from the road, and trees had closed in on them."

Jemmy's shocked appearance

After Jemmy and the Prince get lost, the narrator vividly describes the event in a way that enables the creation of mental images in the reader's mind. The image of Jemmy as he takes a crackling step backwards and freezes is apparent. The yellow glow floating in the fog is also another image that is implicit: "Jemmy took another crackling step backwards—and froze. A sudden yellow glow floated in the fog. The prince burst into squawks and bellows."

The imagery of thhe attacking figure

"Like a snake striking, a ghostly hand darted through the fog and clutched his arm. A second cutthroat! Jemmy looked up and barely made out a long, bony face with hollow cheeks and a nose like a meat cleaver."

The imagery begins with the reader imagining the ghostly figure darting out of the fog like a snake striking. The reader can visualize Jemmy as he looks up his inability to make out the face of the attacker apart from a long and bony face with hollow cheeks and a nose like a meat cleaver. In this sense, the narrator is also able to bring to light the characteristics of the intruder.
