The Whale Rider

whale rider film

What does the dialogue below reveal about the characters’ different attitudes and perspectives?

Koro’s dialogue: Those young men you turn your back on… they got something to learn from you… they got something to offer… you’ve got the privileges but you forget you also got the obligations… I know who you were meant to be… who you were born to be…

Porourangi’s dialogue: I failed you dad… Why? Because I had a daughter… Well I’m probably going to have another daughter… You know what, I’m not going to let you treat another child of mine like that. Koro’s dialogue: “Take her… She’s no use to me.”

Koro is trying to guilt his son. He feels his son has turned his back on both tribe and culture. Porourangi sees Koro as narrow minded and even emotionally abusive. He doesn't want his daughter to experience this.
