I think meeting destiny is a theme. Koro Apirana, the Maori tribe's Chief is aging and a new chief needs to be found. His first-born great-grandchild turns out to be a girl. Eight-year-old Kahu, must then fight to prove her destiny.
the role a woman in the society is onother theme that depicts itself in the novel.in this society which is dominated by male chauvinism eventualy had to accept the fact that even women can play the same roles that men do.this position of chieftainancy was preserved for the male borns but the situation turns opposite when a female is born and therefore this brings a conclussion that women were capable of doing the same things that men could do.
