Robert moves from an outcast to being one of the most important members of the group. He comes out of his shell, has a sense of belonging, and is empowered by what the group has come to mean to him. For Robert, the sense of belonging changed him completely because he'd never had the opportunity or invitation to belong to anyhting. This is why we see him alone crying at the end.......... he'd thought he'd gained everything, bit it had never really existed.
