Mr. Ross believes Robert doesn't try hard because he is afraid of failing to live up to the example set by his overachieving brother, Jeff. Robert finds purpose and identity in the wave. For the first time in his life, Robert feels like he belongs. Fascist-like groups as the Wave often prey on the marginalized, like Robert, of a population.
