In Chapter Nine. we learn that Mr. Ross' history class has become inundated with new students, who are interested in the Wave. New recruits are endless. His students are coming to class, memorizing facts..... they are engaged..... they're disciplined. Unfortunately, he also sees that they are engaging less and less in critical thinking, allowing others to think for them.

In contrast, the Grapevine is flailing. None of the editorial staff has completed their articles for the next edition, and Laurie makes special note of their laziness. She does not, however, introduce them to the Wave because she is uncertain about how she feels.
