How does the author make the reader sympathize with Larry Dunn?

When we see Kenny's reaction to the beating Byron inflicts upon Larry Dunn, we can't help but sympathize. As readers, we would have understood it if Kenny had been glad his brother stood up for him, but he isn't glad.... he's sympathetic...... he feels bad. Thus, we witness Kenny's compassion and feel bad we ever saw it any differently.
