Mr. Alums introduces Kenny as an "advanced second greater". He also adds.....

“I’ve often told you that as Negroes the world is many times a hostile place for us...I’ve pointed out time and time again how vital it is that one be able to read well. I’ve stressed on numerous occasions the importance of being familiar and comfortable with literature.”

The Watson's Go to Birmingham is set in the early 1960s, a time of major change for African Americans, and their journey toward civil rights. Mr. Alums singles Kenny out because he wants to encourage his students to excel, to prepare for the future, and to be ready to make their mark on the world.
