Before the trip Byron brags to buphead that he is not going to say a single word during the trip .when the family starts out however he talks right away.why?

Kenny's father bought a new record player, so they could listen to the music they like rather than the 'hillbilly songs" they play in the South. So, although Byron told Buphead that he would not say a single word the entire car trip, he only lasted as long it took to get to Detroit before he opened his mouth and asked if he could have the first turn on the record player.
