The bombings changes the perspective of the Watsons, especially the kids, about what it means to be black in America. Father wanted to show the boys the hardships of blacks in the South but he did not expect the amount of violence, hate, and destruction that was demonstrated by the church bombing. The Watsons felt a sense of disillusionment and fear that they had not felt before.
