Why would Robert have been made a commanding Lieutenant?

I don't think The War references the exact reason..... Robert has won many medals, like any other soldier, commendation would be a reason for his advancement. Also, replacement soldiers were getting younger and younger as the more seasoned soldiers were killed. Many men were given promotions in rank out of necessity.
