How are Western/world cultural values illustrated in the Visit?

von Goethe, and Brahms are understood, but what of Zimt? Is The Visit a tragic parody of post-WWII development?

What is the significance of the bells used in the Visit?

Such as at the opening of the scene. Any knowledge on what the woodpecker symbolizes would help too.
