Mr. de Silva offers Hari’s father a job as a watchman for the house, but the father is too drunk and dirty and Mr. de Silva retracts the offer and drives off with his family after patronizingly telling Hari he will give him a job as a car-washer if he ever comes to Bombay. Hari is upset with his father’s behavior and Mr. de Silva’s condescension.
