jero was faced with many instances of trials like; the swimming girl on the beach. the borrowing of the velvet cape from amope and the fact that she could not pay back.

This is a play on the word "trial". Brother Jero is tested in his salesmanship as he manipulates his audiences in Nigeria. He certainly goes through "trials" to do so. As well, Brother Jero himself is always on "trial" in the audience's eyes for the empty promises that he makes.
