Why didn't the guests believe in the time machine?

The main reason would be that Time Travel sounds like crazy talk. The guests just don't believe in a machine that can transport them through time. Some guests think it is a joke since he's played tricks on them before, like "showing them a fake ghost last Christmas." (Ghost's were a big part of Christmas in England back then,:you know kind of like Scrooge and all that.)
