why does jensen claim there are "enemies everywhere

Lee Struck and Dave Jensen are fighting over a pocketknife. Jensen breaks Struck’s noseand  then later breaks his own nose to call it even. This tension prompts Jensen to say there is “No safe ground: enemies everywhere. No front or rear.”
